Eggbutt or loose ring? How do you choose?

I obviously know the differences between them, but I'd like to know which one you prefer and why?
Also, other than the fact that the loose ring has the potential to pinch, do they really function any differently at all?

A loose ring is chosen for several reasons. Generally the loose ring magnifies the rein action. If the rider has a very stable seat and good hands, this is the 'reward' for the rider and a well trained horse. It is usually not appropriate for a green horse. It can also be used for a horse that is a bit dull to the rein aids, as it 'shouts' at him with little rein movement. Of course, it should fit appropriately, and may need to be 1/8 inch larger than a properly fitted eggbutt or D ring.

An eggbutt is chosen for riders that are beginner and have less steady hands/seat. This helps to protect the horse's mouth from the unsteady hands of the beginner. It is also useful for a horse who is over sensitive or over reacts to normal rein cues as the rings muffle the rein aids slightly.

Both bits should be regularly inspected for wear. If a loose ring has a worn hole through the arm of the mouthpiece, it should be replaced. An eggbutt or D ring should have the joints inspected as they can become worn and pinch as much or more than a loose ring. An inexpensive bit is often a false economy as it may have to be replaced frequently.
